Now a little story of how the 12 Chinese zodiac animals came to be…
In the beginning, God made this announcement to all the animals, he said unto them
“Come up to my mountain on the morning of the New Year with the first 12 who arrives will be my 12 guardians till the end of time and whoever arrives first I will be my Number One Guardian of the year.”
When all the animals heard this they all wanted to become the first to visit God and so was all looking forward to the New Year.
However, the lazy Cat forgot the date and asked the Rat.
And the sneaky Rat replied that “God will be very busy on New Year’s Day and will be holding the gathering on the following day.” With that the Rat purposely told the Cat the wrong date.
So Cat thanked the Rat and went happily home.
And so as New Year’s Day approached, slow Ox left before all the other animals woke up.
However Rat spied the Ox leave and quietly jumped on the Ox’s back.
Unaware of Rat, Ox arrived at God’s house and stopped at the closed gate and thought that one have yet to arrive and therefore was the First.
After a while, the sun rose and the gate opened.
At the moment, Rat jumped off the back of Ox and ran toward God, beating Ox. Stunned, Ox became second.
Next came the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig making the twelfth.
And so the Cat who was deceived by the Rat, visited God the next morning, missed been included as one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.
And so that’s how the 12 Chinese zodiac animals got chosen and why cats are always seen chasing rats.
